IB students to visit Africa - 22/10/2009

IB students plan visit to Africa

CATS Canterbury International Baccalaureate students are planning a visit to Tanzania, Africa as part of the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) part of the programme.

The CAS element encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service, fostering their awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena.

CATS Canterbury IB students have chosen a visit to Africa as an opportunity to help in local schools and find out more about African society and culture. The trip will be paid for through fundraising events organised entirely by the students through the course of the year.

Part of the excursion will involve learning some basic Swahili and Maasi, bush walking, surveying and tracking and a safari where students will observe the "Big 5": lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

IB student Maria Maily explains what the students have learned about Tanzania so far and why it is of interest to them, "Tanzania is on the East coast of Africa and the capital city is Dar Es Salaam. The native language is Swahili and the weather is mild, but cool at night. The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling. The earliest human remains (Homo habilis) were found in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania."
