Visa Process

The new points-based system for students (tier 4)

UK Visa regulations for international students are in the process of changing. The most up-to-date and detailed information can be found on the UK Border Agency (UKBA) website – their quick guide for students is a good starting point.

Important points to note are:

  • Students must score 40 points to get a visa.
    • 30 points for a visa letter from an approved education provider
    • 10 points for showing sufficient finances to cover course fees and monthly living expenses for up to 9 months
  • Students must study with an approved education provider - all of Cambridge Education Group’s institutions are approved by the UK Border Agency
  • The student’s approved education provider is their immigration sponsor and must tell the UKBA if a student:
    • does not arrive for the start of their course
    • withdraws from a course
    • defers or suspends their studies
    • fails to attend the course for a significant period of time.
  • Students will need to fill in the application form, pay their fee and include:
    • a current passport or travel document
    • a visa letter from a licensed sponsor
    • documents to show they have the right finances (maintenance) available
    • documents used by their sponsors when they accepted them on to the course
    • their ID card if they are applying from inside the United Kingdom
  • The UK Border Agency will also need to record the student’s biometric details if they are applying from outside the United Kingdom.

Our Educational Advisors are in regular contact with the UK Border Agency and can give you detailed advice on how the new regulations affect your students. They can also help to complete and submit visa applications for you.
